INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2-1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups soft bread crumbs
  • 3 cups sliced or chopped apples
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • Juice and grated rind of 1 lemon

STEP BY STEP:

  1. Mix sugar, spices, and salt. Grease a 1 1/2 quart casserole
  2. Pour in a third of the crumbs, then half of the apples
  3. Sprinkle with half of the sugar mixture. Repeat
  4. Mix water, lemon juice and rind; pour over. Put on remaining crumbs and dot with butter
  5. Cover and bake in moderate oven about 350 degrees F for 1 3/4 hours.

TIPS:

Rhubarb, peaches, pineapple, bananas, or cherries may be used instead of apples. Also can substitute 2 1/2 cup applesauce for apples.
