INGREDIENTS:
- 1/2-1 cup sugar
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 cups soft bread crumbs
- 3 cups sliced or chopped apples
- 1/4 cup water
- 3 tbsp butter
- Juice and grated rind of 1 lemon
STEP BY STEP:
- Mix sugar, spices, and salt. Grease a 1 1/2 quart casserole
- Pour in a third of the crumbs, then half of the apples
- Sprinkle with half of the sugar mixture. Repeat
- Mix water, lemon juice and rind; pour over. Put on remaining crumbs and dot with butter
- Cover and bake in moderate oven about 350 degrees F for 1 3/4 hours.
TIPS:
Rhubarb, peaches, pineapple, bananas, or cherries may be used instead of apples. Also can substitute 2 1/2 cup applesauce for apples.
